Chondromalacia/ Runner’s knee

Knee Pain in Kenya: Chondromalacia patellae, also known as “runner’s knee,” is a condition where the cartilage on the under-surface of the patella (kneecap) deteriorates and softens. This condition is common among young, athletic individuals, but may also occur in older adults who have arthritis of the knee.

The joints in your body are cushioned with a type of tissue called articular cartilage. Sometimes, the cartilage inside a joint softens and breaks down. This condition is called chondromalacia. The cartilage loses its ability to protect the ends of the bones as the joint moves. The ends of the bones can rub together, causing pain.

Chondromalacia can affect any joint, but the most common location is the underside of the kneecap.

Causes of Knee Pain in Kenya

Trauma, especially a fracture (break) or dislocation of the kneecap

An imbalance of the muscles around the knee (Some muscles are weaker than others.)

Overuse (repeated bending or twisting) of the knee joint, especially during sports

Poorly aligned muscles or bones near the knee joint can cause chondromalacia

Injury to a meniscus (C-shaped cartilage inside the knee joint)

Rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis

An infection in the knee joint

Repeated episodes of bleeding inside the knee joint

Repeated injections of steroid drugs into the knee

Symptoms of Knee Pain in Kenya

The most common symptom of chondromalacia (Knee Pain in Kenya) is a dull, aching pain in the front of your knee, behind your kneecap. This pain can get worse when you go up or down stairs. It also can flare up after you have been sitting in one position for a long time.

Chondromalacia also can make your knee joint “catch” meaning you suddenly have trouble moving it past a certain point, or “give way” (buckle unexpectedly). These symptoms tend to occur when you bend your knee repeatedly, especially when you go down stairs.

In some cases, the painful knee also can appear puffy or swollen.

Chondromalacia can cause a creaky sound or grinding sensation when you move your knee.

Risk factors

Age – Adolescents and young adults are at high risk for this condition. During growth spurts, the muscles and bones develop rapidly, which may contribute to short-term muscle imbalances.

Sex – Females are more likely than males to develop Knee Pain in Kenya, as they typically possess less muscle mass than males. This can cause abnormal knee positioning, as well as more lateral (side) pressure on the kneecap.

Flat feet– Having flat feet may place more stress on the knee joints than having higher arches would.

Previous injury – A prior injury to the kneecap, such as a dislocation can increase your risk of developing a runner’s knee.

High activity level – If you have a high activity level or engage in frequent exercises that place pressure on your knee joints, this can increase the risk for knee problems.

Arthritis – Runner’s knee can also be a symptom of arthritis, a condition causing inflammation to the joint and tissue. Inflammation can prevent the kneecap from functioning properly.

Helpful tips (ease Knee Pain in Kenya)

Unlike the damage to cartilage caused by arthritis, damage caused by chondromalacia can often heal.

Conservative treatment is usually recommended first since rest and physical therapy may eliminate the symptoms.

Inflammation caused by chondromalacia must be allowed to subside. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication may be prescribed to reduce the discomfort of the condition.

For several weeks, patients should avoid activities that cause knee pain. Then, activity can be gradually increased.

During this time, low-impact activities, such as swimming, can help an athlete keep in shape, while avoiding running or activities that stress the knee.

Once the inflammation has subsided, physical therapy can focus on strengthening and increasing the flexibility of the quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups.
