THE CONNECTION BETWEEN SCIATICA(Nerve pain) AND DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE

WHY ARE YOU LIMPING? Let’s explore…

Can sciatica be cured permanently? What is sciatica in the first place? Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. Typically, sciatica affects only one side of your body.

The pain may be constant or may come and go. Also, the pain is usually more severe in your leg compared to your lower back. The pain may feel worse if you sit or stand for long periods of time, when you stand up and when your twist your upper body.

Disc conditions associated with sciatica

The discs act as shock absorbers between the bones of our spine and are designed to help the back stay flexible while we change positions or are in motion. When the discs are damaged, the resulting pain gets worse during periods of inactivity like when sitting or standing for a long time, and also when bending or twisting.

It tends to get better when walking or running. Extreme pain, numbeness and tingling may come and go for a few days or months.

Some of the major causes of sciatica include:

  • A herniated or slipped disk that causes pressure on a nerve root. Pressure from vertebrae can cause the gel-like center of a disk to bulge (herniate) through a weakness in its outer wall, eventually pressing on the sciatic nerve.
  • Spinal stenosis – this is the abnormal narrowing of the spinal canal. This narrowing reduces the available space for the spinal cord and nerves.
  • Osteoarthritis/Spondylosis – Bone spurs (jagged edges of bone) can form in aging spine and compress lower back nerves.
  • Degenerative disc disease – The most common cause of back/neck pain is degeneration of the discs. Degenerative disk disease is the natural wear down of the disks between vertebrae of the spine. The wearing down of the disks shortens their height and leads to the nerve passageways becoming narrower, pinching the sciatic nerve roots as they leave the spine.

Lower back (Lumbar spine) pain may radiate into the buttock, hip and thighs when nerves are involved while the upper back (cervical spine) pain, radiates to the shoulder blades.

OTHER CAUSES OF SCIATICA

  • Trauma injury to the lumbar spine or sciatic nerve.
  • Piriformis syndrome –Piriformis syndrome is a rare neuromuscular disorder in which your piriformis muscle involuntarily contracts or tightens, causing sciatica.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency – Vitamin B12 helps in synthesizing the fatty (myelin) sheath that covers the nerves, which is important in nerve function and conduction of impulses.
  • Sciatica may occur due to vitamin B12 deficiency and may be more common in elderly people, above 60 years of age. Diabetic individuals who are treated with metformin may also be at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency due to malabsorption.

Risk factors

  • Age. Age-related changes in the spine, such as herniated disks and bone spurs
  • Obesity. Excess body weight can contribute to the spinal changes that trigger sciatica.
  • Occupation. A job that requires you to twist your back, carry heavy loads or drive a motor vehicle for long periods
  • Prolonged sitting
  • Diabetes. This condition, which affects the way your body uses blood sugar, increases your risk of nerve damage.

Symptoms of sciatica

  • The pain can vary widely, from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating pain. Sometimes it can feel like a jolt or electric shock
  • Moderate to severe pain in lower back, buttock and down your leg.
  • Numbness or weakness in your lower back, buttock, leg or feet.
  • “Pins and needles” feeling in your legs, toes or feet.

What can you do about it?

Have you been diagnosed with sciatica, degenerative disc disease of the back, bulging or herniated discs?Do you suspect that this is what is creeping in on you?

Degenerative diseases are also genetic. If you have it in the family, we pray that it doesn’t find it’s way to you but it’s wise that you take preventative measures.

These conditions tend to get worse over time. Mild cases are easier to treat while it’s still early, so take action. Don’t wait.

Some things that you can incorporate into your lifestyle to make this possible may include:

  • Exercising to strengthen the muscles around the affected joint, providing it with greater support and helping it stay healthy.
  • Weight loss for those who are overweight, is one thing you can do to improve symptoms and even slow progression.
  • Massage therapy/Physiotherapy can stimulate blood flow and make a stressed area become more warm and relaxed.
  • Eating anti- inflammatory foods like whole grains, fish and other healthy fats. Turmeric with black pepper is a powerful natural anti-inflammatory as well.
  • Taking food supplements that help to build back the cartilage and discs. This in turn helps to cure sciatica nerve pain.

Food supplements? Which food supplements?

The most effective supplements for repairing damaged, bulging, degenerated or herniated discs so far, is a combination of high strength Collagen with Magnesium, and Glucosamine Chondroitin.

Patients start to notice significant improvement within 2 to 3 weeks of taking the supplements. Mild cases may even recover in the first month of taking the supplements.

Collagen with Magnesium

Our joint cartilage and discs of the back are primarily composed of collagen. As we age, we produce less and less of the collagen and wear and tear sets in. By boosting your collagen levels, your body is capable of repairing the wear and tear and restoring your joint/back to it’s healthy state naturally. As your discs regain their health, the pressure on your sciatic nerve eases and the pain disappears gradually.

Collagen is a natural product extracted from a natural steaming process of cow bone and skin. No side effects. Other benefits that we derive from taking collagen include improving the elacticity of skin, maintaining gut health and strong hair and nails.

Glucosamine & Chondroitin

Glucosamine sulphate and Chondroitin are naturally occuring compounds in the joints. It is therefore an important component as well when building back the worn out cartilage and discs of the back. Glucosamine is also a natural anti inflammatory.

Patients who combine glucosamine Chondroitin with Collagen supplements show more impressive results in terms of recovery time as compared to those who are taking Collagen alone.
